About me

I'm Brendan Loy, a 26-year-old graduate of USC and Notre Dame now living and working in Knoxville, Tennessee. My wife Becky and I are brand-new parents of a beautiful baby girl, born on New Year's Eve.

I'm a big-time sports fan, a politics, media & law junkie, an astronomy buff, a weather nerd, an Apple aficionado, a Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fanatic, and an all-around dork. My blog is best-known for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina, but I blog about anything and everything that interests me.

Uga is dead, long live Uga

Uga VI, the mascot of the Georgia Bulldogs since 1999, has died.

Uga2

He will be buried alongside his predecessors, Uga I through V, in a vault inside the football stadium. And he will of course be replaced by Uga VII.

I'm not a Georgia fan, obviously, but Uga (pronounced "uh-guh") is pretty freakin' cool. Not as cool as Traveler, of course, but cool nonetheless. R.I.P., Uga VI.

I grew up 20 miles from Athens and I'm a Georgia fan. It's too bad UGA VI didn't live to get the send off his predecessor did: a retirement ceremony at Sanford Stadium, with 90,000 fans chanting "Damn good dawg! Damn good dawg!"

Winningest mascot in Georgia history. Two SEC football championships and six bowl wins. Named "America's best mascot" by SI, and the only live mascot ever to be pictured on their cover.

Damn good dawg!

I always thought it was pronounced "Uh guh". Thanks for making me learn on the weekend. Jerk.

Hmm, you may be right. Let me check.

Wikipedia confirms that David is right and I'm wrong. "UH-GUH." D'oh! Will fix.

P.S. By the way, technically it was Uga V who was on the cover of SI.

Another oool fact.....

The lineage for both Coca-Cola and UGA can be traced to Columbus, GA. Georgia and Auburn played their annual football wars in Columbus for decades.

Columbus is also home to the AFLAC duck and Ft. Benning.

But the coolest mascot of all is the LIVE TIGER on LSU's campus.

Sweet, that means I didn't learn a thing! My weekend is still safe!

Good riddance. I hope he goes to mascot hell.

That's an ugly dog.

Sorry, JT. All dogs go to heaven. :)
