UPDATE: iPhone 3G Announced
- 3G wireless
- GPS
- Improved battery life
- thinner
- improved audio
- will be available in 70 countries
UPDATE BY BRENDAN: In light of a) the much faster connection speed, b) the new lower price (just $199 for the 8GB model, literally one-third of what the first iPhones cost last June), c) the various new cool features (particularly GPS), and d) the fact that my Sprint contract recently expired, I would like to offer the following graphical commentary, which roughly sums up my feelings:
P.S. But, I ask again: can you use it as a modem???

I don't get the Snow Leopard hype. I read that all it really is is a few speed enhancements and Cocoa modifications.
The Keynote so far has been a snoozefest.

Bah. I should be there for work.
Going to Bonnaroo instead. :/

Well the TypePad app would have been useful for guestblogging if SOMEONE weren't shutting down his blog...

Hahaha, seriously. Steve Jobs is maliciously tempting me to keep my blog AND buy an iPhone...

The MLB.com app looks awesome. After the play footage is awesome.

Aww man, July? You mean I gotta wait a whole month for this cool stuff??

So I'm being told he said the new one will have GPS? Wow. It'll be real tempting to drop my blackberry now then... 3G and GPS?
It's also cheaper per month than the blackberry with AT&T.

WOOHOO

The Keynote has been a total letdown so far. Anyone who reads any sort of techblog knew this was coming months ago. The apps are cool and the price drop is huge but I guess I was expecting more? Oh well....now I need a way out of my T-Mobile account.

Well there goes another $300 of my hard earned money, thanks alot Steve...

I assume it doesn't natively support phone-as-modem, since Steve didn't mention it. But the old iPhones could be hacked into modems, and if I get confirmation that a similar hack is possible on the new iPhones without breaking them in some way, I may very well buy one.
If not, maybe not, but damn, that thing is cool, particularly now that it has GPS. And $199 is MUCH more easily justifiable than the old prices.

Yeah, I've seen ways to get it to work as a modem. And AT&T certainly doesn't care... I use my bb tethered.

8GB is not enough -- with the likely explosion of apps through the store, the numerous photos of Loyette you'll want to carry around, and the ability to have all your favorite Trojan and Irish video highlights with you at all times, do yourself a favor and save up the extra $100 for the 16GB version.
I actually find the combination of EDGE and WiFi (especially with 1 free login a day at Starbucks stores) to be more than adequate, so 3G probably won't motivate me to upgrade from my version 1.0.

Hmm. How to exit fresh new Verizon 2-year contract without taking a bath? Hmm...
Posted by: Skunkitty | Jun 9, 2008 4:12:33 PM
Now its just a matter of trying to find someone willing to take my current iPhone off my hands for a decent price.
Posted by: David K. | Jun 9, 2008 4:18:21 PM
Hoosier, I agree that 3G alone might not be enough, but 3G PLUS GPS is darn compelling
Posted by: David K. | Jun 9, 2008 4:27:41 PM
If it has google maps what do you need GPS for? Can't it already triangulate your location using cell phone towers?
Posted by: | Jun 9, 2008 4:30:15 PM
anon - depending on your location the traingulation feature can be fairly accurate to pretty vague. I've had it located me in my office at work, and then later, while on the road, in the middle of Lake Washington. Its better than nothing, but GPS is accurate to within a few meters, especially useful when you are out in the rural areas where cell coverage is even spottier.

Dear Anonymous Hoosier,
Brendan would blow out a 16GB iPhone within a month. But then again with the .ME storage, he'd probably blow out that whole system in two months! ;)
