About me

I'm Brendan Loy, a 26-year-old graduate of USC and Notre Dame now living and working in Knoxville, Tennessee. My wife Becky and I are brand-new parents of a beautiful baby girl, born on New Year's Eve.

I'm a big-time sports fan, a politics, media & law junkie, an astronomy buff, a weather nerd, an Apple aficionado, a Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fanatic, and an all-around dork. My blog is best-known for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina, but I blog about anything and everything that interests me.

Space Shuttle blasts off

The Space Shuttle Endeavour's wee-hours launch was a success. Endeavour is scheduled for the longest Shuttle mission ever, 16 days. I hope the crew members aren't hoops fans! They're going to miss Selection Sunday and the always-exciting opening weekend of the tourney! :)

Anyway, the Shuttle is scheduled to dock with the ISS late tomorrow night, and undock on Monday the 24th at 7:55 PM EDT. There will be an excellent viewing opportunity here in Knoxville about 24 hours after the time of scheduled undocking, so hopefully everything stays on schedule this time.

I never saw a night launch before. Wow, is it beautiful.

Oh yeah, and BTW, the shuttle commander is a graduate of The University of Tennessee.

I'm guessing that a lot folks probably don't know that Tennessee has one of the preeminent programs for space education in the country: http://www.utsi.edu/

Jay, I am sure Vandy students would love to add to their arsenal that Tennessee students are a bunch of space cadets. ;-)

Yeah, Vandy doesn't really count, since for the most part, it's a school full of Yankees who couldn't get into a real Ivy.  Basically, any opinions they may have are completely irrelevant.

I'm sure Tennesse would prefer to label them rocket scientists.
