About me

I'm Brendan Loy, a 26-year-old graduate of USC and Notre Dame now living and working in Knoxville, Tennessee. My wife Becky and I are brand-new parents of a beautiful baby girl, born on New Year's Eve.

I'm a big-time sports fan, a politics, media & law junkie, an astronomy buff, a weather nerd, an Apple aficionado, a Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fanatic, and an all-around dork. My blog is best-known for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina, but I blog about anything and everything that interests me.

Arrrrrgh.

The good news is, the Notre Dame-George Mason game will be the primary ~9:30 game on the Knoxville CBS affiliate Thursday night. Sweet!

The bad news is, contrary to what I guessed last night, USC-Kansas State won't be the primary ~7:00 game. I guess they think Belmont, a Nashville university with 4,700 students, has a large enough following in East Tennessee that it makes sense to prioritize #2 Duke vs. #15 Belmont over the super-frosh showdown of Mayo vs. Beasley. Ugh.

I just hope our Comcast connection can handle MMOD. (Speaking of which, if you want a "VIP pass," you'd better sign up now -- they're 86% full!)

Hey Brendan if you can't get the USC game locally then try installing SlingBox media player and use our connection.

J&T

Heaven forbid they should show a game involving a Tennessee school in the state of Tennessee.

Plus, let's remember the schools involved. First, there's Belmont, which, although no longer directly controlled by the Tennessee Baptist Convention, is still heavily influenced by the TBC. Baptists seem to hold sway in this state, in case you haven't noticed. Plus, Belmont has one of the premier music business programs in the country (their biggest benefactor is Mike Curb, one of the kings of music row. BU's basketball arena is named for Curb). The music industry pumps a huge amount of money into this state. Ergo, it makes perfect sense that the Belmont game get broadcast statewide.

And the other team is Duke. They always get huge exposure come tournament time.

But if it's any consolation, this game should become a blowout early, which means that there should be plenty of coverage of the K-State game.

Jason, I'm not saying it's some sort of moral outrage that they're not showing the game. I'm just disappointed because USC is my team, and I thought I might be able to watch them without doing any fancy technological footwork or crossing my fingers for a Duke blowout. That's all.

I'm sure that some of the local sports bars will probably have it on. I'd try Wild Wing Cafe off of Campbell Station. It's new, clean, lots of televisions, and the food's actually pretty good.

I do know that they have DirectTV there, and I believe that DirectTV has the MegaMarchMadness package where you basically can get all of the games, regardless of your local game...

I know you've got a kid and all, but jeez, get thee to a bar!
