Super Bowl open thread
Super Bowl XLII is underway. Leave your comments on the game -- and/or the ads -- here. I may post occasional updates as well.
UPDATE: A rather surprising halftime score of 7-3 in favor of the Patriots. If the Pats put it together in the second half, the Giants will rue their failure to get a touchdown on either of their two red-zone opportunities.
Nothing terribly memorable on the ad front, IMHO, though the Budweiser Clydsdale ad was cute, as usual.
Did anyone else in a Super Tuesday state get an Obama ad during the local block of ads immediately after the first half ended? There are no national political ads during the Super Bowl, by Fox's decree, but Obama bought an ad from the local affiliate here in East Tennessee.
UPDATE 2: 10-7 Giants with 11 minutes left!
UPDATE 3: Patriots re-take the lead, 14-10, with 2:42 to go. Giants ball, all three timeouts remaiing.
UPDATE 4: After the Play. Of. The. Century. by Eli Manning and David Tyree ... TOUCHDOWN GIANTS!!
Now, can Tom Brady lead New England down the field in 35 seconds to put them in position for a game-tying, perfect-season-saving field goal? Or will we see the biggest upset since Super Bowl III?
UPDATE 5: GIANTS WIN!!!
17-14, final. Wow!
P.S. Is this a good omen for Obama? :)
UPDATE 6: Back-to-back Super Bowl MVPs for the Manning brothers!
P.P.S. About that Obama ad, it was indeed run in 24 23 states (plus D.C.) during the local affiliates' halftime ad block. The cost was around $250,000. Here it is:
Here's the list of states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Washington, plus the District of Columbia.

The SOBE life water lizards was the worst commercial I have ever seen.
I can't believe this game is this close. The Pats will open it up once they read all the Giants signals during the half.

No Obama ads...but we're getting tons of them for the State propositions, especially the Indian gaming ones.

Obama ads here in Northern Virginia. Been advertising like crazy the past few days. No Clinton ads though.

That was a pathetic challange.

I heerd on the Cablenewsies that Obama's massive PooperScooper ad buy (hitting 21 P.S. Tuesday states I think they said) did indeed include Super Bowl ads.
Also that Barack had announced he is watching the game with Gov. Bill Richardson. / I've heard of the Nondenial Denial but the Nonendorsement Endorsement is pushing the Envelope, here :}.
So, with Whom is Hillary watching? ;> (RFK Jr? :)
Go, Pats! (yawn / woops / nonono :)

PS (nono not PooperScooper; postscript, yez idjiits :) ~
Jay Johnson, wouldn't you agree that there's too much Emphasis on the Superbowl Pointspread & Strategy & Score? I mean, what about the Issues?

Loved the finale to the (im)perfect season and Bellichick going out the loser that he is (tonite).

Ok, so while from a perspective of caring about who won, I didn't care, I always hope to see an entertaining Super Bowl.
Certainly didn't disappoint. I dig this kind of football the way I love the pitcher's duel in baseball. It's tough, hard hitting, and rewards effort.
Helluva Super Bowl.

This was a SuperBowl for the ages. And that last drive by Eli will go down in history. Phenomenal effort on his part and the part of the team. The Giants simply NEVER gave up. AWESOME!!!!

All Hail the New York Giants!!
That was one HELL of a game!!! Where did the Giants D come from??
And Bilichek shows his total lack of class and walks off the field before the final play.
And thanks to the 400 point money line my $500 is now $2500!!!!!!

That last drive was ugly but effective. Big gains on busted plays, going for it on 4th and a foot.
One wonders which political campaign the last drive reflects?

"And Bilichek shows his total lack of class and walks off the field before the final play."
I was thinking the same thing. He and Randy Moss deserve each other...

FUCK!!!! I Mean FUCK!!!! What was I thinking???!!! FUCK!!! FUCKK!!!! AHHH!!! FUKCCC!!!!
Posted by: Tiki Barber | Feb 3, 2008 10:26:19 PM
The play of the game was when Belichek outcoached himself and didn't kick the field goal and didn't make it on 4th down late in the 3rd quarter.
And how ironic is it that the Giants win by 3 in their upset.

Oh yeah and that E-Trade baby was the best commerical(s). No contest.
Posted by: Diane | Feb 3, 2008 10:40:01 PM
No the first Audi commercial was the best....
Posted by: gahrie | Feb 3, 2008 10:49:36 PM
That was a very smart ad strategy on Obama's part. Good, feel good ad.
Regarding ads, did anyone else find the Sales Genie ads offensive? Was it really necessary to give the panda bears those Chinese accents or use an Indian guy with an Indian accent? It seemed to me that the "silly accent" was supposed to be the joke. Kind of f-d up, if you ask me.

I thought the Patriots made a terrible mistake going for it on 4th and 13 instead of trying for the long field goal.
I don't know why you guys are bashing Belichick. After the 4th-down Hail Mary pass fell incomplete, he ran onto the field and congratulated Tom Coughlin and the Giants coaching staff. Then the zebras put a second back on the clock, and most of the Pats went ahead to the locker room to let the Giants celebrate their victory. Maybe Jesus or Gandhi would've come back to watch that final second and do it all over again, but Belichick bowed out graciously enough.

Hmm somehow my first post didn't show up.
GOOOOOOOOOOO GIANTS!
My dad watched the game in St.Thomas in a bar full of Pats fans. He's on cloud nine right now. Me and Josh watched the game with Billy .. unfrickin' believable. Best football game I've ever seen.

I remember watching Super Bowl XXV -- the first Super Bowl I ever watched -- with you guys. I specifically remember your dad loudly swearing when the Bills got a safety to take a 12-3 lead over the Giants. :) Of course, things were much more joyful at the end, thanks to a certain Buffalo kicker who shall remain nameless...
(Becky's and my respective childroom memories of that particular Super Bowl are rather different. Heh.)
Anyway, the point is, I can definitely imagine how high on cloud nine your dad must be right now. :) Congrats!

My brother was talking about that game last night too - he says he remembers my dad going into the kitchen for the field goal because he couldn't watch.
I will pass along your congratulations to my dad :)
