About me

I'm Brendan Loy, a 26-year-old graduate of USC and Notre Dame now living and working in Knoxville, Tennessee. My wife Becky and I are brand-new parents of a beautiful baby girl, born on New Year's Eve.

I'm a big-time sports fan, a politics, media & law junkie, an astronomy buff, a weather nerd, an Apple aficionado, a Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fanatic, and an all-around dork. My blog is best-known for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina, but I blog about anything and everything that interests me.

Incredible, simply incredible.

I've always thought (well, since I first heard it) that Ashokan Farewell was one of the most beautiful, haunting tunes that I had ever heard. I don't think that there's ever been a piece of music that has ever been quite so perfectly paired with a movie than that one. (All due respect to John Williams).

Cool video.

Damn. Now that's some serious northern aggression.

I like it.

Awesome. Maybe when I have to teach the Civil War in May I'll just show the 4-minute video and be done with it:-)

Amazing - I never knew that piece was called Ashokan Farewell, and my first thought was "Ashokan NY?" - Yep. I've spent many many a pleasant hour in the Ashokan area, and I'm even looking at buying a summer place up there. It was "home away from home" growing up

This really helps you appreciate the role Grant and Sherman played in the War.

Awesome! The topic for this year's Academic Decathlon is the Civil War. My students will love this.
