Slap thyself, John L. Smith: Hawaii says no
Ladies and gentlemen, I dreamed the impossible dream, but alas, it looks like that dream -- of former Michigan State coach John L. Smith "doing crazy s**t while wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a lei" -- will not happen. It appears Hawaii is going to keep things in-house, hiring defensive coordinator Greg McMackin as June Jones's successor.
Smith's non-hiring probably will not surprise the Honolulu Advertiser's Ferd Lewis, who openly mocked Coach Slappy for declaring himself a candidate for the Warriors' job, nor Dave Reardon of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, who wrote on Wednesday:
According to the Associated Press, Smith is "being considered for the Hawaii job." That's hard to believe, considering the former Michigan State coach's history with Hawaii. He would be a very tough sell for the fans after his team's vehement complaints about officiating in a game Hawaii won in 2004, a botched game-week tape exchange prior to a 2005 game, and Michigan State pulling out of its game against Hawaii in 2007 that helped create the Warriors' schedule problems.
Well, I can understand that. But still: damn. Hawaii Head Coach John L. Smith? Imagine the possibilities!! This is the biggest missed opportunity in football since those NFL cheerleaders in the lesbian sex scandal decided not to pose for Penthouse.

I can't wait to come back here and laugh it up when John L. Smith takes his next team, at whichever school is prescient enough to hire him, to a national championship.
