About me

I'm Brendan Loy, a 26-year-old graduate of USC and Notre Dame now living and working in Knoxville, Tennessee. My wife Becky and I are brand-new parents of a beautiful baby girl, born on New Year's Eve.

I'm a big-time sports fan, a politics, media & law junkie, an astronomy buff, a weather nerd, an Apple aficionado, a Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fanatic, and an all-around dork. My blog is best-known for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina, but I blog about anything and everything that interests me.

Fred-mentum?

It's been a heady few days for Fred Thompson. First came the dominating debate performance. That was followed by endorsements from conservative magazine Human Events and from the New York Conservative Party (of James and William F. Buckley fame). Next came the surging crowds at Thompson's events in South Carolina. On Friday, Bill Quick of Daily Pundit wrote, "I think we're about to see what will later be described as an 'amazing turnaround' for Fred in South Carolina." Now, even the New York Times is talking about a Thompson surge. (Hat tip: InstaPundit.)

As yet, there are no new polls to support, or refute, the belief that Fred is gaining ground in the Palmetto State. In any event, he's got six days left to turn all this positivity surrounding his campaign into votes.

P.S. On the other hand, it sounds like Fred's a little strapped for cash.

Fred's last stand.

You may be Intrigued (as I was :) to learn of the Mysteriously oracular (?) graffitum veryrecently & Anonymously inscribed [in bright Scarlet tint :] upon a Traffic sign, at the very NewEnglandy intersection of Main St & Hartford Avenue in yankeeNoselookdown Newington, CT. / This misdemeanant amendment to the Signage consists, quite simply, of a single carefully-crafted redletter "F". / Its communicative consequence, however, is the following unmistakeable directive: "NO TURN ON FRED". :}

Now whether this mystifying RedRepublican-tinged Message is somesort of an inscrutable Harbinger of new northeastern Things to come, I'm sure I do not Know. / However, I wouldn't be altogether Shocked if come next Saturday, the good GOPers of the First-to-secede Palmetto State do Turn their Lonely eyes to: Fred :].

"That was followed by endorsements from conservative magazine Human Events and from the New York Conservative Party (of James and William F. Buckley fame)."

Fame, for the quixotic '65 NYC Mayoral candidacy of Chairman Bill, yes; and Yes again, for the astounding & Flukish '70 USSenatorial Election of Lord Jim, via narrow Plurality, for One term, after which the sainted Daniel Patrick Moynihan (r.i.p.) came along & Explained matters :].

But just to be sure (to be Sure :) that we don't allocate Excessive credit to the Buckleyite Castle Irish, let us note that the Actual, albeit Unsung, godfather of the NYCP was the late lamented J. Daniel Mahoney :} ~ of whom WFB Jr wrote, that when he asked him what President Nixon had told him in the Congratulatory phonecall the morning after the 3rd-party Election of littlebrother Jimmy in 1970, Dan replied: "The President said that J. Daniel Mahoney is the country's greatest living American."
