Fighting Manginos win Orange Bowl
It's Kansas 24, Virginia Tech 14 with 5:51 left in the Orange Bowl. Hokies ball on their own 22.
As I mentioned earlier, if the Jayhawks win, the Irish Trojan Bowl Pick 'em Contest will become a two-person race between Seth Carmack and Trisha Neudorff. If the Hokies rally, Brian Dupuis will clinch the contest.
UPDATE: Awesome touchdown catch by Kyle Harper for VT, and after a 15-play, 78-yard, 2-minute-51-second Hokies drive, it's 24-21 Kansas with three minutes left. Finally, a competitive BCS game!
UPDATE 2: Kansas wins! So, Dupuis is eliminated. Carmack leads the pick 'em contest, and can clinch early if Rutgers and Tulsa win the International and GMAC bowls, respectively. If either Ball State or Bowling Green (or both) win, Neudroff stays alive heading into the BCS title game, needing an Ohio State victory over LSU to move ahead of Dupuis.

Another heavy favorite goes down? Another team that alot of people said didn't belong upsets the favorite? More proof that rankings and a playoff aren't the be all end all in good college football.

Maybe, maybe not. Va Tech just cut the lead to 3 with about 3 minutes to go - plenty of time to hold and get a FG.
But at last a good game!

Hmm... I would have kicked deep.

Damn...
I'm crying over here, Brendan.
That wasn't a good game. VT wasn't frikin' playing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See, to me, David, this is why college football NEEDS a playoff. Kansas here never had a chance to prove whether or not it should go for the national title. (Now, in all fairness, if we had a football selection committee, Kansas may have been left out, because Mizzou would have probably ranked above them - but again, Mizzou never had that chance either, and actually got left out of the BCS picture entirely.) It is just a shame that this game is the end for Kansas, and that the Mizzou game was their swan song, espicially when Kansas proved they could beat a top tier team.
This is also an argument as to why conference title games hurt their respective conferences - that last loss by a good team doesn't make them look good in the current system, even though they just lost to another ostensibly good team.

Minich, I completely agree with you regarding conference championship games. I think all conferences should be 10 team max. 9 conference games, 3 non-conf, 4 if you want to schedule either Hawaii or a 1-AA opponent. Then every team has their shot at the national championship (at least from a major conference) because in order to be undefeated they also have to be conference champ, and its hard to argue against excluding a conference champ from the titel picture if they do that well. Plus you dont' set up re-matches from the regular season.
I still see no point in a playoff, it devalues the regular season and trades off one set of problems for another with little benefit. Every team has the chance to go undefeated or maybe 1 loss.

David, what do you do with the "excess" in the Big X, Big 12, ACC, SEC that have more than 10 teams?
Posted by: jlr | Jan 4, 2008 2:25:47 PM
David K. is as insane as the rest of the powers that be in college football. You lose a game, you could be out of the playoffs, simple as that. EVERY game is still deathly important to win, we aren't talking 40 teams like pro sports, we're talking 119, over 100 of which never play each other during the regular season. If there's ever been a season for a playoff it's this one (and the same thing will be said next year).

jlr, drop a few teams, form more conferences with them. 120 or so Div 1 teams, so you have 12 conferences. If they ever do go to a playoff system (which as i said doesn't really add anything, despite sandy's over the top rantings) you have 12 conference champions and 4 at large spots.

Are you trying to say that you aren't, in fact, insane? ;-)

That's exactly what I'm saying. And all my other personalities aggree with me!!
