About me

I'm Brendan Loy, a 26-year-old graduate of USC and Notre Dame now living and working in Knoxville, Tennessee. My wife Becky and I are brand-new parents of a beautiful baby girl, born on New Year's Eve.

I'm a big-time sports fan, a politics, media & law junkie, an astronomy buff, a weather nerd, an Apple aficionado, a Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fanatic, and an all-around dork. My blog is best-known for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina, but I blog about anything and everything that interests me.

Breaking news!

Britney Spears's 16-year-old sister is pregnant... with John Edwards's baby!!

Okay, I made that last part up. Jamie Lynn Spears is pregnant, though.

All I want for Christmas is Ma Spears's parenting book...

Brendan,
I can understand you posting this – it is everywhere on the internet right now, and I am not just talking about TMZ.com, but cnn.com, foxnews.com, etc…Plus it’s your blog, ya can do whatcha like.

My question is when did $#*t like this become news-worthy? I’m only 30 but I can remember a time when news was much, much different. All of this entertainment crap being a main focus of society is a bad, bad, sign…maybe not as bad as the honeybees disappearing, but nevertheless, a bad sign.

Someone please explain to me why anyone should waste their time reading about another teenage “celebrity” getting knocked up, or arrested, or breaking up with their beau? If both the Spears’ girls would not have been dealt a royal flush by lady luck they both would be selling slurpies and scratch-off tickets at a 7-11 in Alabama (Actually that isn’t fair to Gas Station workers. The girls would be buying slurpies and scratch-off tickets at the local 7-11 with their babies on their hips) . They have no talent, limited intelligence, and low morals – Yet we pay attention. How sad.

A high school student who lives in Louisiana, Jamie Lynn Spears reportedly met the father, Casey Aldridge, the son of a Tennessee papermill worker, at church. Jamie Lynn Spears' personal publicist was not available for comment.

Methinks they were not quite paying attention in church, they missed that whole wait until your married thing...

Good point Dave! In Catholic School I was caught kissing Lynn Ann Madden in a pew after weekday mass - I was ceremoniously gang-beaten by three nuns…okay that’s a little extreme. BUT I was corporally punished and sent to the confessional.

BREAKING NEWS: Nickelodeon have issued a statement regarding Jamie Lynn and her future at Nick. The network will simply change the name of her Show to "Zoey Sex-Ed 101" and continue on with production...post reproduction.

JSR, you can blame me for any Spears related news that shows up on the blog. I wrote my MA thesis on her and the development of corporate music in America. :)

I read that the father is 19 and she's only 16. Shouldn't there be some criminal issues with that?? I seem to recall a black youth getting put in the slammer for some similar behaviour (sans the bun-in-the-oven).

I'm guessing either the law is different, or the fact that they were reportedly living together with her parents consent makes a difference.

All you ever do is guess.

Breaking News: Time has just changed its Person of the Year to Jamie Lynn Spears. Developing...

In Alabama it's not a crime for a 19 year old to have sex with a 16 year old, as long as they are related.

Becky,
I've been teaching at the college level for a little while now and let me say, that would be one thesis that I would LOVE to read!

Arrrgh, I wish these things weren't NEWS like they are now.

Here's a tip: BBC. They report on things like the recent election of Jacob Zuma to head the ANC in South Africa, as a slap in the face to the current president, who no longer leads his own party. Or that a more conservative president was elected in South Korea. (Anyone KNOW there was an election in South Korea? I wouldn't have following CNN or Fox.) I download their daily news podcast (they have a few, all of which are good). The only frivolous news is whenever the royals get covered (which, regrettably, is happening right now because Princess Diana's death inquest is going on). However, the BBC World Service is awesome. They ask hard questions of leaders, and do their best to get reports out of places where authoritarian regimes rule. They will even interview people from those place and ask good questions (these usually get uncomfortable responses, but they ask, and you can tell if the guy is lying).

Seriously. BBC. Tops American news coverage by miles. (Or kilometers, to be precise.) Do whatever labour you need to find it.

Book's off for now, it looks like. Sorry, Brendon. I'm sure there would have been lots of invaluable parenting advice in it for your own little one.

Lynne Spears wrote a book on Christian parenting in the south. Given her daughters' behavior, that sounds about right.
