WTF?
I think that a big ole WTF? is in order after this box score came across the ticker:
Gardner-Webb 84
Kentucky 68
In Rupp Arena. No, seriously.
Guess UK's national title hopes are dashed. Well, except for the fact that there's a tournament that decides that...
UPDATE BY BRENDAN: Pat Forde argues that this upset is on par with Appalachian State's win over Michigan. What do you think?
Kentucky was a 25-point favorite, if that matters.

lol

I was just thinking earlier today that I'd love to make it up to Rupp Arena for a game, but I don't know if it will possible with the baby on the way. However, I was looking at the game on Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend against some Bumblef*** low-major opponent, and thinking, ah, but that won't even be a good game, Kentucky'll kill 'em.
Or not.
Is this a sign that college basketball season is going to be like college football season? I will see your Appalachian State over Michigan at the Big House by 2 points, and I will raise you Gardner Webb over Kentucky at Rupp Arena by 18 points.

This guy argues this is indeed a bigger upset than Appy State over Michigan.
Not sure about that, but regardless:
GARDNER-WEBB IS HOT! HOT! HOT!

Pat Forde is also making the comparison.
Okay, I'm going to bed now. :)

I blame it on Tubby's below-par recruiting (not really that good of an excuse but still). Is it possible that Minnesota is now feeling the ultimate buyer's remorse for their decision to fire Glenn Mason as their football coach in favor of Tim Brewster (who has an atrocious 1-9 record this year, including a loss to I-AA North Dakota State), and then hiring Tubby Smith as their basketball coach? Ouch!

I wonder how the UK fans are feeling about Gillespie now...

Not really. Point spreads are used by bookies to make sure that they don't lose money taking your bets.

I wonder how Gillespie is feeling about UK fans now...are "For Sale" signs in his front yard in his future? (the ones put there by the fans, not his realator)

I think that the problem with Kentucky was that its players were thinking We're Big Bad Kentucky and G-W was an itsy bitsy minor team. Kind of like the KY football team's thinking from a few weeks ago that "we beat LSU and battled Florida and Miss. St. is small potatoes." Except Miss. St. needed the game to get into bowl contention. All in the mindset. (Well and we were kind of beat up... Okay, so I am excusing them. :-) )
Not to mention that the upperclass players did NOT step up and provide leadership. It's pretty bad when a *%$_)@!! walk-on is showing more strong play than your senior supposed "team leader."
I don't hold Gillispie completely responsible. He is, at least, currently holding to the idea that those that practice effectively will win the right to start/play. But I think some guys think in an "it's all me" mode and don't play team ball, and that may take a few months to overcome.... (I always thought that was the problem with the last 3-4 years' teams: the McD All Americans that came in felt "entitled" to their share of minutes because they were great high school players.)
I'm hoping Billy Clyde will be giving these guys a reality check this afternoon at practice.
Please, Brendan, do come to Lexington sometime. A game at Rupp Arena is always an interesting experience.
