Terrail Lambert decapitates Tavita Pritchard

Horrible. Another illegal helmet-to-helmet hit against a quarterback goes uncalled. What the f*** is wrong with these referees? And with college-football referees generally? Good grief.

P.S. Um, but anyway, Go Irish, Beat Farm. It's 14-14, late in the third. Speaking of refs, apparently there was an awful call that robbed ND of a touchdown earlier, though I missed it.

UPDATE: Irish win!

So it's 3-9. Remember "9-3 is not good enough"? ... Still, it could have been worse. Like 2-10.

Ah, well. Next year.

UPDATE 2: Reading this over, I realized it sorta sounds like I'm saying, sarcastically, "Ah, well. Maybe the Irish will got 2-10 next year." That wasn't my intention. I meant "Next year hopefully they'll be better."

To be fair, I don't think Lambert intentionally did it. Pritchard took an unfortunate slide at the wrong moment. And yes, it should have been called.

I don't think it was intentional, either. But as you say, it should have been called, and there is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for not calling it. It's not like it was a subtle thing that the ref wasn't in position to see or something. And you'd think maybe there would have been a memo circulated by the NCAA to its officials after the Jake Locker and Colt Brennan helmet-to-helmet hits a couple weeks ago. Apparently not.

Grimes had what looked like a great layout catch in the endzone (I had it on picture in picture while watching Tenn-UK). The replay ref in this game thinks it's basketball - hand is part of the ball - so he called it incomplete when Grimes came down.

I had assumed it was a TD, so I returned my attention to Tenn-UK. Then I looked back at the PIP and asked myself "why does ND have the ball again?"

The circus gets crazier: Stanford puts Pritchard back in after they took his helmet away.

USC upset notwithstanding, I think Harbaugh is a pretty pathetic coach.

If you wanna talk pathetic referees, how about that personal foul for unsportsmanlike conduct against Tenn? Player gets tackled short of the two point conversion to win the game in a game that will decide who goes to the SEC Championship game and he throws the ball away so he gets flagged for 15 yards on the next possession. Ridiculous.

Oops, just saw you already talked about it in the quadruple OT post. Anyway, still a really bad call.

Um, Brendan, I don't think the hit was helmet-to-helmet. I saw Lambert take the helmet off with a forearm. IMO it still should have been a personal foul, but for blow to the head instead.

Of course none of this would be an issue if the QB dropped his John Elway impersonation five yards sooner and hit the ground (feet first).

I don't want to start a "which conference is BETTER" thread, cause no one wins those, but can we give the SEC the "Most Exciting" award? This weekend alone, a number one goes down in triple OT, and that is followed up with a 4 OT game to get Tennessee into the SEC title game. And that is after another 3 OT loss for LSU, OT between Bama and UGA, Bama beating ARkansas with 30 seconds left, LSU-FLorida, LSU-Auburn, and you can go on and on... the craziest conference in the craziest year I can remember...

With regard to Lambert's hit, I honestly don't think a penalty was warranted. If you look at the way Lambert was approaching him, he had his arms out ready to make a good solid tackle, leading with his shoulder. Pritchard just happened to duck down at the wrong time and their helmets collided. If he didn't want to get hit, he should have slid. By continuing to run the ball, he opened himself up to the possibility of getting hit. And, while it was a tough hit, I think it would have been wrong to penalize Lambert for a tackle that would have been a solid tackle (one of the few Lambert has ever made) had Pritchard not decided to go down at the wrong time.

Matt: Point conceded.

What the hell is wrong with our conference that we're the only ones who can beat Notre Dame? Ugh, I feel personally slimed by Stanford and fUTLA's ineptitude.

It was not helmet-to-helmet, and the replay reversal of the Grimes TD was a far worse instance of officiating. It was shockingly bad and an example of gross incompetence (if viewed most charitably and least cynically). As Ed Cunningham said, there was indisputable evidence it was a good catch.

The hit on Pritchard certainly looked bad since he lost his helmet, but he needs to slide earlier (before defender commits) and more athletically.

Sorry, guys, but Lambert's hit was flagrantly helmet-to-helmet -- even the ESPN announcers all agreed on that -- and a violation of NCAA spearing rules that the referees should have called. The NCAA is being way too lax about these dangerous hits.
