About me

I'm Brendan Loy, a 26-year-old graduate of USC and Notre Dame now living and working in Knoxville, Tennessee. My wife Becky and I are brand-new parents of a beautiful baby girl, born on New Year's Eve.

I'm a big-time sports fan, a politics, media & law junkie, an astronomy buff, a weather nerd, an Apple aficionado, a Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fanatic, and an all-around dork. My blog is best-known for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina, but I blog about anything and everything that interests me.

I love college football

The thrill of victory...

...and the agony of defeat.

What a crazy, crazy, crazy season.

P.S. After the jump, my extremely unscientific, off-the-top-of-my-head Top 20.

Yeah, I have LSU ahead of Kentucky, Oregon ahead of Cal, and Florida ahead of Auburn. So sue me.

1. Ohio State (7-0)
2. South Florida (6-0)
3. Boston College (7-0)
4. Arizona State (7-0) (if they beat Washington)
5. LSU (6-1)
6. Oklahoma (6-1)
7. Oregon (5-1)
8. Cal (5-1)
9. Kentucky (6-1)
10 Kansas (6-0)
11. West Virginia (5-1)
12. South Carolina (6-1)
13. Virginia Tech (6-1)
14. Missouri (5-1)
15. Florida (4-2)
16. USC (5-1)
17. Hawaii (7-0)
18. Texas (5-2)
19. Auburn (5-2)
20. Buffalo (3-4)*

*Okay, maybe not, but I couldn't find anyone else deserving of this spot. Go Bulls!

Is not the connection here totally obvious? Both teams wear some combination of blue*, yellow, and white. Blue, white, and yellow are also 'ruin colors and are therefore supremely gay. Thus, LSU and Cal lost because they wear supremely gay colors.

*For the purposes of this comment, purple is considered an extremely homo version of blue.

I pretty much agree with your rankings, though I'd flip South Florida and Ohio State, and I'd have Oklahoma much lower, around 12/13.

I'd bump Hawaii up to above Florida and SC, and possibly flip BC and ASU, ASU looked damn good tonight and Tuitama is really leading that team.

What a disasterous final play for Cal. Don't know why they didn't just kick the field goal with, what, 14 seconds left?

Here goes my third unofficial Brendan Loy 2007 USC-ND pool standings post. And we have a WINNER. Yes, the ND pool has already been decided, even though ND still has five more games to lose (er play). Congratulations Sandy Underpants!!

Here are the details: First, the USC Pool. All entrants picked USC to beat Arizona, but once again, the best picks were by those who picked the Trojans to win by the smallest of margins. Three people, Brendan Loy, Anonymous Hoosier and the beef picked the 7 point margin exactly. And there is a new leader this week. While Lisa Velte had been the leader in my first two postings, Sean Sullivan has taken over the lead by four points over Scientizzle with Lisa falling to third place. The standings follow (as before, the first group of people have a 5-1 record.)

Sean Sullivan 57
Scientizzle 61
Lisa Velte 68
Vicki Lopez 69
Josh Rubin 73
Texasyank 78
thebeef 80
Amit Joshi 83
gahrie 86
Anonymous Hoosier 87
C. Bassett 90
Ken Stern 90
David K. 91
Brendan Loy 99
Mark Gardner 100
Admiral Halsey 103
Andrew 106
SAndy Underpants 113
Mike Wiser 121
Randy 122

Lauren Taylor (4-2) 87

In the ND pool, Sandy Underpants, with a 6-1 record has clinched the pool victory. He has a two game lead over his nearest competitors and neither they nor anyone else in the pool has a chance to even get into a tie with Sandy over the next 5 weeks. Interestingly, the vast majority of the entrants had picked Notre Dame to beat Boston College as only 4 people (Josh Rubin, Sandy Underpants, Andrew and Ken Stern) picked BC. Bringing up the rear in this pool is Sean Sullivan, who has maintained his perfect 0-7 record...but of course he is the new leader of the USC pool.

Sandy Underpants (6-1) 126
Andrew (4-3) 132
Ken Stern (4-3) 133
Mark Gardner (3-4) 152
Lisa Velte (3-4) 152
Unknown Entrant (3-4) 155
Scientizzle (3-4) 155
Josh Rubin (3-4) 157
thebeef (3-4) 158
gahrie (3-4) 182
Mike Wiser (3-4) 210
Anonymous Hoosier (2-5) 153
Admiral Halsey (2-5) 155
Amit Joseph (2-5) 167
David K. (2-5) 169
Brendan Loy (2-5) 170
Mike Marchand (2-5) 179
Lauren Taylor (2-5) 184
Texasyank (2-5) 196
Randy (1-6) 182
Sean Sullivan (0-7) 215

PS...I will be out of town next week so Brendan or someone else will have to post the standings.

Congrats, Sandy Underpants! LOL!

David, Tuitama? He plays for the other Arizona school. :)

Sorry, Andrew's correct, I meant Carpenter. Watching both Arizona then ASU yesterday + posting late = confusion.

My top 10

1. South Florida
2. Ohio State
3. Oklahoma
4. Boston College
5. LSU
6. Oregon
7. Kentucky
8. Arizona State
9. South Carolina
10. California

How enlightened of Andrew to use the words "gay" and "homo" to reflect something that is undesireable, negative, and to be frowned upon. You are truely a (straight) man to be respected and admired.

Apparently you haven't met Andrew.

And now, GLAAD, you've just given him the attention that he was seeking.

Yes, after decades of mediocre football and low expectations, Kentucky is finally getting its act together and learning how to be a responsible SEC team. And I thank everyone (Brendan et al.) for voting the Wildcats up so high. But, despite the Cats' win over LSU, they're really not a top 10 team; the win over LSU was *at home*, always an advantage. And I think LSU, having toyed with lousy Cats teams for so many years, underestimated them. Kentucky lost to South Carolina away just a little over 10 days ago, for heaven's sake! I can see them in the top 20 in the final mix, maybe even a top 15, but not a top 10. There is hope and maybe even expectation that they can go 11-1, but I guarantee you that they have a long way before becoming consistent. This is a once-in-a-generation year for the team. (Yeah, I'm pessimistic.)

David, FYI, that second Andrew comment was actually Brendan. Hopefully he's changed my name by now, since I last commented on the blog using his Mac on Saturday.

Heh. Oops. I thought I'd taken care of all those "Andrew" comments.

It did seem a little out of character ;-)
