Baby pool!
As loyal readers of the Irish Trojan, we know that he is soon to become a daddy. In fact, mommy-to-be Becky officially starts her third trimester today! So, in the spirit of the Brendansphere, it's only reasonable that we have some sort of contest. (And yes, I have permission of the mommy- and daddy-to-be to do this!)
Here's how it will work. Submit, in comments on this post, your guess for when Becky will have the baby. (Remember, she's due on New Year's Eve.) The winner will be selected based on whomever is closest to the exact day, hour, and minute. If there is a tie, the tiebreaking categories will be weight and length of the little one (weight is the first tiebreaker, length is the second tiebreaker).
In other words, just submit your guesses like this:
Date:
Time: (hour & minute)*
Weight: (in pounds)
Length: (in inches)
*Please note: "Time" is based on wherever Becky is when she has the baby--the local time of the city that the kid is born in. You pick the time, the mommy (or the baby) chooses the time zone.
Please include a name or at least a pseudonym, so we know whom to congratulate once the baby is born ... other than the parents, that is.
Naturally, if we're going to have a contest, it's only right that we give the winner something. Therefore the winner will get the exact same amount that s/he would get from any other pool on this website: bragging rights. :-)
Good luck!
PS: This post is for well-wishers only. If you have something else to say, or perhaps something negative to say about the baby, your post will be deleted and you will be removed from the site. This is your first, last, and only warning.

Dane makes a good point with his "GMT" reference. Josh, shall we assume that all entries are Eastern time (it'll be EST by then, rather than EDT) unless otherwise specified? After all, unless something very unexpected happens, the baby will be born in the Eastern Time Zone. :)

We'll make the "time" be whatever it says on the Birth Certificate (i.e. Local Time). In other words, if Becky happens to be in Phoenix, it will be on Phoenix time, but if she's in Nashville, it will be Nashville time.
I do this because even though I'm sure Becky knows where she *wants* to be when the baby comes, the baby might have other ideas. And I don't want any arguments of "Well, it's 8:16 AM here, but not there."
I will change the main post accordingly.
As soon as I read Dane's post, my head started to hurt. Dane, unless you want to change your answer, I'm putting you down as having claimed 8:16 AM

My prediction is based on events that are calibrated off of GMT and certain other assumptions based on other averages. Therefore, for the purposes of my prediction I shall assume the baby will actually be borne EST. The necessary adjustment to 08:16 GMT 24 December 2007 would be 3:16 AM 24 December 2007.

Helpful hint to guessers, I've almost never seen a baby's "official length" not be in 1/2 inch increments, maybe 1/4 on rare occasions.
Although I can see Brendan in there getting the official measurement in 32nds of an inch. :P

JO,
I don't think an extra pound or two for the baby is really going to push Becky over the edge and make her uncomfortable and impair mobility. Most women put on 15 pounds or so. Assuming she doesn't eat poorly, and she exercises, I would imagine she will put on about the same. If she doesn't exercise, and gorges herself, then yes, she will put 25-30 lbs and will have difficulty.
Discipline, Becky! You can do it! Good luck to you and Brendan.
Posted by: | Oct 9, 2007 7:53:19 PM
Oct 9, 7:53pm, HAHAHAHA! The "average" woman puts on between 25 and 35 pounds during pregnancy. Kate Hudson put on 70. Nearly all of the women I've chatted with (and oh my gosh, preggos come out of the woodwork to chat once the belly pops) put on between 30 and 50 pounds. I only know two people who gained less than 20 pounds. One was a 5 foot tall vegan and the other entirely lost her appetite while preggers.
I think the worst thing a preggo can do is freak out about her weight gain and try to diet while pregnant. I mean, pregnancy isn't a liscense to sit around and eat potato chips all day, but it's also normal to gain weight and it's equally normal to lose that weight with some concerted effort once the baby is born.
Posted by: Becky | Oct 10, 2007 8:22:28 AM
Becky,
Obviously each person is different, and different bodies react differently.
See this info from www.babycenter.com
"How much weight should I gain during my pregnancy?
It depends on your height and weight, or body mass index (BMI), before you conceived. You can calculate your BMI here.
If pre-pregnancy weight was in the healthy range for your height according to your healthcare provider (a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9), you should gain between 25 and 35 pounds, gaining 2 to 5 pounds in the first trimester and about 1 pound per week for the rest of your pregnancy for the optimal growth of your baby.
If you were underweight for your height at conception (a BMI below 18.5), you should gain 28 to 40 pounds. If you were overweight for your height (a BMI of 25 to 29.9), you should gain 15 to 25 pounds. If you were obese (a BMI of 30 or higher), you should gain no more than 15 pounds. If you're having twins you should gain about 35 to 45 pounds. If you fall into any of these four categories, talk to your healthcare provider about how much you should gain each month."
Based on this, I don't think Kate Hudson's weight gain is germane to the topic at hand (ie - whether a large baby will make you gain a lot of weight and be immobile). Kate came into her pregnancy well underweight, so it's natural to assume she would gain a lot.
Based on this info, I assumed you would gain about 15 lbs. during pregnancy, and thus, you would (hopefully) not be impaired by a 9 lb. baby, as JO speculated.
I'm rooting for a big healthy baby. Good luck. You must be so excited!
Posted by: | Oct 10, 2007 11:25:43 AM
Did this anonymous poster just say that Becky is obese since according to them Becky isn't supposed to gain more than about 15 pounds???? Ok maybe it's just me but I'm offended. Who the F*** cares how much someone gains as long as it's healthy and you feel good and the baby is doing good. I know the general rule is around 25 to 30 pounds but aren't we all unique?? I have had 4 kids. The first one I gained 65, the second 22, the third about 35 I think and the last one only 16 pounds. So there's a range for you. Good luck Becky. If it comes off or it doesn't right after, like I said who the F*** cares but you! LOL

Josh, I think you e-mailed me something a while back about cutting off entries at some point. Let's say the end of the day November 30 is the deadline (that may even have been your very suggestion, I forget), so from December 1 on, the pool will be closed to new entries.
Of course, in the unlikely event Becky goes into labor before December 1 (technically, now that she's 34 weeks, the odds are quite good that the baby would be fine if delivered now), any entries received after she went into labor will not count. Wouldn't want to condone any insider trading. :)
