About me

I'm Brendan Loy, a 26-year-old graduate of USC and Notre Dame now living and working in Knoxville, Tennessee. My wife Becky and I are brand-new parents of a beautiful baby girl, born on New Year's Eve.

I'm a big-time sports fan, a politics, media & law junkie, an astronomy buff, a weather nerd, an Apple aficionado, a Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fanatic, and an all-around dork. My blog is best-known for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina, but I blog about anything and everything that interests me.

Felix the Cat. 5

We're back from Buffalo... and greeted by this lovely image:

Remarkable. The second Category 5 hurricane in the Caribbean in the last two weeks, and this one exploded into being over the course of less than two days! I'm in the process of writing a full update -- but it will appear first on Pajamas Media, with only an excerpt here at BrendanLoy.com. The management at PJM has asked me to do hurricane updates for them, and unlike the bum who runs this website, they're going to pay me! :) I'm allowed to cross-post excerpts of my Pajamas posts here, and then after 48 hours I can include the whole thing. Anyway, stay tuned for the latest.

» Blow-by-Blow: Blogging Hurricane Felix from Pajamas Media
The PJM team of correspondents now includes a storm chaser - Brendan Loy, a self-described "weather nerd," whose reporting on Hurricane Katrina on his personal blog was hailed both by the blogosphere and the mainstream media. He begins with extended... [Read More]

My my, Mr. Big Shot Hurricane Blogger gets a big gig...congrats.

Congrats...but beware..there are lots of people who have serious regrets after dealing with PJ Media.....amongst other things they are not known for their loyalty....

Congrats! But sad to think that you are selling out the chance to indoctrinate random hurricane readers into your brand of geekitude just for a few measly bucks.

On the other hand, I guess those bucks means a lot when you're shopping for three at TFM.

Brendan, regards the pj writeup: the point with Felix is not whether further strengthening is possible -- after all, it is a Cat 5 already -- but that it will remain a very catastrophically strong hurricane, at Cat 4 or 5 strength, when making landfall in Central America.

What is this national obsession with will it get stronger and how much stronger can it get? 145 kt MSW is extreme. Let's just leave it at that.

And what's with the bolded header (that I know you didn't write) claiming that Felix is "this season's first big storm"? Hardly.

Therein lies the inherent problem of working for the "man". Your work gets watered down and you lose some creative control of content.

But then again, baby does literally need new shoes!

Congrats on the PJM gig :)

Good point, Margie. Sometimes I get too obsessed with the numbers (mph, millibars, etc.) at the expense of the actual impacts. I included your comment prominently in my update.

Anonymous Hoosier, I don't know that the impact of my "selling out" is as dire as you suggest. I'll still be blogging about hurricanes here -- I'll just be posting excerpts and then encouraging people to click the link over to PJM for the rest. I think there's still plenty of opportunity for me to "indoctrinate random hurricane readers into [my] brand of geekitude." :)

Sometimes fancy cat toys bought at the pet store are not as much fun as some that you can easily make- making them puts a little love into their toys! Here’ s my list of favorites that I have seen work with my cats. Let us know if you have some additions to the list.

Cats suck. Birds rule.
